NAN GALLERY :History, Features and Management Philosophy

NAN GALLERY was established on Nov. 1, 1980 by a native painter in Taiwan Lin Fu-Nan. After three decades in 2010, the business management has been handed over to the second generation Lin Ying-Ying, the daughter of the gallery founder.

The gallery has now proliferated into four units, NAN GALLERY ; On-line Shop nan.com.tw of Taiwan School Paintings ; a periodical magazine of Taiwan School Paintings ; and a portal of art trade platform.

NAN GALLERY Group’s objective is “ Footing on Taiwan with Global View “.

NAN GALLERY was named after the founder Lin Fu-Nan who was born in Tainan, a city in southern Taiwan. He had made up his mind to become a painter during his youth been deeply affected by the current of Modernism. In 1976, Lin Fu-nan went to New York , USA , stayed six months long in SOHO area where he visited many galleries teeming with life. This trip has led him to a thought of opening a gallery in Taipei.

In 1980, when per capita income in Taiwan was only 3,000 U.S. Dollars at that time, NAN GALLERY was decidedly opened without any hesitation, Lin Fu-nan said at the grand opening : “ This would be a gallery for Modern Art. “.

During the first two decades, NAN GALLERY was run by some family members, including Lin Fu-nan, Huang Yu-Lin, Huang Jiunn-Hsiung, Huang Jiunn-Jieh, and Lin Ying-Ying. Lin Fu-nan was managing the first stage, from 1980 to 1985, mainly the exhibition of modern art. When Huang Yu-Ling participated in the business planning of NAN GALLERY during the following five years, 1986∼1990, the modern art exhibition had been gradually switched to the sales & marketing of promoting native paintings of Taiwan . After that, two brothers Huang Jiunn-Hsiung & Huang Jiunn-Jieh joined NAN GALLERY to affirm and carry out the determined policy of moving toward native paintings promotion. The periodical magazine of Taiwan School Paintings was issued by Huang Yu-Ling in 1992, eight years later, two websites were installed respectively in 2000, namely, www.taiwanschool.com.tw and www.nan.com.tw. Two years later, these two websites have been merged and become one on-line shop nan.com.tw of Taiwan School Paintings.

NAN GALLERY has had created in the past many records of No. 1 in Taiwan, including : Opened the first fine arts class in 1980, teaching people how to appreciate a painting ; Held the first Taipei Gallery Expo in 1986 ; Started to sell mini-sized paintings in 1988, for which the mid-income class can afford to buy ; Launched in 1989 a trade on the second-tier market through the established Collectors Center ; Issued periodical magazine of Taiwan School Paintings in 1992 ; Installed on-line shop for paintings sale in 2000 ; and Began to operate two physical galleries in 2004, the Dun-nan gallery and the Jen-Ai gallery.

With its past management experiences of running NAN GALLERY for three decades, the management team insists that “ Localization must be first before Globalization “. Our hands-on experiences of running art gallery during the age of 80s ; running art museum during the age of 90s ; and the installation of websites in 2000 ; all these have made NAN GALLERY in a strong position to do on-line sales to promote Taiwan School Paintings under a newly built art trade platform, and through the concept of Direct Marketing.
